After my long travel day, I wound up sleeping in until around 3pm. Once I woke up, I got ready to head out right away.
A random note but one that I think is important to my journey: I’ve always been the type of person to shower in the morning, but beginning in Positano I started to take my showers at night. I decided to do this for a couple reasons. Showering before bed means I’m one step closer to being ready to leave when I wake up, but the main reason is that it’s cold here and walking around with wet hair just makes it colder.
I didn’t have any specific destination in mind and planned to simply wander around Venice, so I walked to the train station and headed to the island. The hostel that I’m staying at is about 10 minutes away via train from the main portion of Venice and super close to the train station.
I kept the same approach to exploring that I had on my first day in Rome. I kept turning down different streets that I felt were calling to me and didn’t use a map. I explored various streets and shops, walked over multiple bridges, strolled along the canals, and ended up walking almost 6 miles overall.
I stopped at a candy store and accidentally got carried away filling a bag with various assortments of sweets. I walked around a couple of shops, partially window shopping and partially wanting to warm up for a few moments. On my way back, I stopped at a grocery store and picked up a few things. In retrospect, I probably could’ve gone to a grocery store near the hostel or at least closer to the train station so I wouldn’t have to carry two grocery bags for miles but it was fine.
I headed back to the hostel after wandering around for a few hours and dropped my groceries off in the kitchen. The hostel I’m staying at is beautiful, modern, and clean throughout all of the common spaces except the kitchen. The kitchen looked slightly like a disaster so we’ll see over the course of my stay how often I decide to use it.
I was getting hungry so I decided to check out a place that had caught my eye the first day called Soul Kitchen Café which was right down the block. I ended up ordering a bean soup that was delicious and a side of roasted vegetables. The soup was so filling that I ended up taking the veggies back with me.
I dropped my leftovers off in the kitchen, noting that it still looked pretty messy and maybe that’s just how it’s always going to be, and then went up to my room to take a nap before work.
I decided that the following day I would have a set plan of things to visit in Venice and that I would also need to buy a hat. The weather is colder here than in Rome and Positano, so it’s time to start layering up more than I had been in the previous areas.
I’m still trying to decide where I should go next. I had originally planned to visit Vienna, Austria but it looks like it’s going to be snowing during the time I would be there. I still have a few days to figure it out, so I guess we’ll just wait and see what happens.
